Just imagine you're on the streets here. There's a lot of traffic and people drive like mad (Portuguese traffic seems so disciplined to me now). There's no public transport, but taxis are cheap and if you're not wealthy enough to buy yourself a motorbike or a car, you take the taxi. Every 5 seconds a taxi passes by. They are as yellow as a taxi should be, and most of them are missing some less essential parts (a window, some lights...). They also have their own way of communicating with people on the streets. If you don't need a taxi, the driver tries anyway and he blows the horn to catch your attention. If you dó need a taxi, you make a sign, he slows down and you shout through the open window where you want to go. If he is going there, he blows the horn to confirm (and if there's no good reason to honk, he does it just because he likes the sound) and you have to say how much you want to pay for the ride. Don't forget this, because he will count at least double of the price if you are white. Did you know you can fit 6 to 7 passengers in one "normal sized" taxi? The only thing you can hope for is that the other passengers are normal sized as well :) He picks up other people as long as there is an empty space in the car.
